Borrowing University of Chicago Dissertations

If you have borrowing privileges at the University of Chicago Library, you may check out a dissertation just as you would check out a book. The library catalog contains records for University of Chicago dissertations and will provide the call number and location information.

If you do not have University of Chicago Library borrowing privileges, please contact your own library for assistance with interlibrary loan, database access, or other local options for access to our dissertations. Our Interlibrary Loan Department will lend most University of Chicago Ph.D. dissertations written before 1948 when the library holds a second copy. If you wish to view a dissertation on campus, please contact the Identification & Privileges Office to make arrangements for a visit to the University of Chicago Library. Identifying University of Chicago Dissertations

The library catalog contains records for University of Chicago dissertations. Search by author or title, using either the Browse or Keyword search option, for a known item. Try an Advanced Keyword search, exploring Keyword and Limit options, to identify dissertations on a particular topic or from a specific school or department. For example, search by Notes+Contents for thesis ph.d. chicago social service administration. Catalog records include call numbers and location information. (Please note: The University of Chicago Library catalog is freely available.)

Library catalog records for recent University of Chicago dissertations appear in a locally created RefShare database.

Records for many University of Chicago dissertations appear in WorldCat and in various subject databases. In ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, the full text of titles processed in 1997 and later is usually available online. Some earlier dissertations are available online also. To limit to University of Chicago dissertations, use the School name/code 0330 or search the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses @ University of Chicago subset. (Please note: The ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database is a subscription database, and remote access using NSIT's web proxy is limited to our students, faculty, & staff.)
